UNIDO, ADB mull boosting cooperation to serve SDG 9

Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Takehiko Nakao and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Director General LI Yong met at ADB headquarters and discussed strengthened collaboration as ADB moves toward finalizing its long-term Strategy 2030.

In their discussions, Nakao and Li emphasized the importance of economic cooperation and inclusive and sustainable industrialization, coupled with technological innovation to support sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific, and explored opportunities to step up their collaboration, including within the framework of UNIDO’s flagship Programs for Country Partnership.

“Our cooperation with UNIDO is one of ADB’s longest standing operational partnerships with a UN agency,” Nakao said. “UNIDO’s work to support the deployment of clean and innovative technology and industrial development approaches are of particular interest.”

Li added, “The strengthened cooperation between the ADB, UNIDO, and member countries, specifically when it comes to promoting innovation-led inclusive and sustainable industrial development along major economic corridors in the region, will trigger a stronger development impact on the ground, and help countries achieve in particular Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure).”

The partnership between ADB and UNIDO goes back to a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 1996. As an example, the two organizations collaborated on a technical assistance project for special economic zone and industrial park development in Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic in the context of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) programme. In Pakistan and Bangladesh there is a common sector focus in promoting agri-business and agri-product processing, logistics development, energy efficiency and industrial development. UNIDO and ADB have also explored project-level cooperation in South-east Asia, as well as South Asia, and the People’s Republic of China.

ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and the Pacific through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth, and regional integration. Established in 1966, it is owned by 67 members—48 from the region. In 2017, ADB operations totaled $32.2 billion, including $11.9 billion in co-financing.

UNIDO, a UN specialized agency based in Vienna, is mandated to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development for poverty eradication, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability.
