Dr Ashraf Al- Zaabi, consultant pulmonary and head of respirology division at Zayed Military Hospital, expected the chronic disease chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to be the third major death cause in the world by 2030.
Al-Zaabi expounded that COPD causes limitations in lung airflow and is currently the fourth major death cause in the world.
The current rate of COPD spread in the UAE is 1.9%, he said, noting that the most common symptoms are breathlessness and a chronic cough.
Al-Zaabi made the remarks during the 4th Regional Thoracic Medicine Forum which Dubai hosted over the past two days.
More than 150 thoracic medicine experts took part in the event which was organized by Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.
The forum called for spreading more awareness
about respiratory diseases.
The forum tackled protection from thoracic medicine in the region as well as up-to-date innovation in respiratory system care.
The experts taking part in the forum detected a rise in pulmonary diseases in the region, noting that the associated lung diseases present a major health burden to medical systems.
The forum also highlighted the diagnosis and misdiagnosis as well as the challenges besetting the control of spreading pulmonary diseases across the region that include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
The experts also
stressed the importance of early detection of the symptoms and proper adherence
to treatment protocols.
