Bibliotheca Alexandrina organizes several events to mark the International Museum Day (IMD) slated for May 18.
The BA Sadat Museum, in cooperation with the national committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Egypt), organizes a celebration pn Monday under the title “Museums and the Internet: A New Public”
The event includes the screening of a short film on the BA Sadat Museum, a presentation of the museum through different social media platforms, a tour of the museum and its most prominent collections, and a number of diverse artistic segments.
A collection of publications is to be distributed to the event participants and attendees.
On May 20 and 21, the BA Manuscripts Museum will organize free guided tours for children and school students with the aim of raising awareness about the role of museums in preserving, conserving, and showcasing antiquities belonging to different ancient civilizations. Museums also play an educational and cultural role by disseminating knowledge about the history, civilization, and culture of different nations and by developing the artistic taste of children and youth.
It is noteworthy that the IMD celebrations first began in 1977 under the sponsorship of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), and they are now held on May 18 of every year.
The theme of this year’s celebrations is “Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics”. It focuses on how technology influenced the role of museums and enabled them to reach people beyond their core audience, as well as strengthen and build up connections online and especially via the various social networks, in order to enable visitors to share their experiences via different means. The theme also highlights the establishment of common projects that aim to interpret and present museum acquisitions in a new light.
