$4 m Taiwanese grant to support EBRD projects

Taipei China is renewing its commitment as a European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) donor by providing a $ 4 million grant for technical cooperation activities that will support economies across three continents. These resources will help design and implement the bank’s investments, upgrade standards and know-how in the corporate sector, support authorities with policy reform and fund research.

The grant agreements were signed today at the 2018 EBRD Annual Meeting in Jordan in the presence of Taiwanese Representative, David Lin, and the EBRD’s Vice President, Policy and Partnerships, Pierre Heilbronn.

The EBRD-Taiwanese cooperation is a long-standing partnership that began in 1991. Pushing the global green agenda and fostering entrepreneurial spirit in transition economies have been among the main objectives of Taiwanese engagement as a donor to the EBRD.

Taiwanese grants through the Taiwan Business-EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund are especially directed towards sustainable resource management, intelligent transportation systems, the information technology-related knowledge economy as well as the corporate sector through advisory programs for small and medium-sized enterprises and the Women in Business program.

So far, €36.5 million has been provided for technical cooperation and multi-donor funds, including the EBRD Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Multi-Donor Account and the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership Fund.

Recent examples of EBRD-Taiwanese cooperation are projects in support of economic inclusion of Syrian refugees in Jordan; of young people in the Croatian labor market; and helping the city of Amman face the challenges of rapid urban growth.
