UNIDO, China's Belt, Road Initiative further cooperation in inclusive and sustainable industrial development

The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) LI Yong attended a range of events and bilateral meetings focused on strengthening collaboration between UNIDO and China.

The Sixth China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair – which is co-hosted by China’s Ministry of Commerce and its Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Intellectual Property Office, and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government – is based on the core philosophy of “Better Technology, Better Life” and highlights the global importance of green technology and innovation in achieving sustainable development worldwide.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Director General Li highlighted the importance of innovation and technology for developing countries and economies in transition: “The theme of the fair - Innovation-driven Development, Intellectual Property Protection, and Technology Trade Promotion - is important for China, and for the rest of the world.” Li added: “UNIDO believes that inclusive and sustainable industrial development can be achieved through production processes that are less carbon-intensive and that can save energy, reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions, while also stimulating innovation, technological change, diversification and job creation,” according to UNIDO.

The Belt and Road Initiative is one key area of cooperation between UNIDO and China, in particular through UNIDO’s promotion of cross-border investment among countries participating in the initiative. During the UNIDO Day on 20 April 2018, the Belt and Road Cross-Border Cooperation Forum was hosted by UNIDO, in partnership with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, and the UNIDO China Chapter Office of the Green Industry Platform. “The 2018 UNIDO Day marks an important step in our partnership with China as the Belt and Road advances,” said Li at the opening ceremony.

Within the framework of the forum, a BRIDGE for Cities event took place, which revolved around urban-industrial development and which took green industry and sustainable development as its central themes. A China-funded UNIDO regional project titled “Fostering inclusive and sustainable industrial development in the New Silk Road Economic Belt” was presented during a conference organized by UNIDO in Shanghai on 18 April 2018, and will develop industrial corridors, technology and industrial parks in Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan as well as deepen regional economic integration. UNIDO has a long track record in supporting cross border industrial cooperation, including in Belt and Road (BRI) countries.

Li also attended a range of bilateral meetings, including with YING Yong, Mayor of the Shanghai Municipal Government, and WANG Bingnan, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Commerce. The UNIDO Director General also visited the new UNIDO ITPO office in Shanghai. At the global level, UNIDO’s network of Investment and Technology Promotion Offices are actively involved in driving investment and the transfer of sustainable technologies to developing countries.

During the Director General’s visit, the Shanghai International Intelligent Manufacturing Promotion Center was launched in Shanghai. The Center aims to promote intelligent manufacturing technology for Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises to help them improve their manufacturing efficiency and competitiveness.

The launch also coincided with the 2018 Global CEO Conference themed "Chinese manufacturing and enterprises go global”. The goal of the conference is the promotion of the cooperation among emerging economies in globalization.
