Chris Maher, the manager of World Health Organization (WHO)'s regional polio eradication program, commended the UAE Pakistan Assistance Program (UAE PAP) as a key player in fighting polio in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed
Al Nahyan, the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, allocated
about $ 200 million for the APA, Maher said in statements on the fringe of the annual
meeting of the WHO regional office to coordinate polio vaccination campaigns in
Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The funds were channeled into extending polio
vaccinations to hard-to-reach areas in Pakistan, he said.
Maher expected the two-day meeting of the WHO
regional office - which Abu Dhabi hosts – to help
coordinate programs to ensure that vaccinations reach all children in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The get-together is part of a series of
meetings that have been held between the polio eradication programs in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Experts from Pakistan, Afghanistan and representatives of the UNICEF in both countries attended the meeting.
